Introduction

This unique hotel extension is in the picturesque town of Pitlochry in Scotland and required a series of bespoke, architectural aluminium products to enhance various aspects of the building throughout.

The Project

The owners of a Perthshire hotel have invested £1.25 million in the new development to enhance their offering to an ever-growing tourism market.

J & R Group, owners of McKays Hotel in Pitlochry, built 12 new bedrooms and created a new 100- seat function suite at the hotel.

There are also plans to establish a McKay’s townhouse with two apartments followed by the refurbishment of seven en-suite bedrooms at the site of the former Caffe Scozia.

The £1.25m development takes J & R Group’s total investment in McKay’s to around £3m and the number of rooms to 39.

Challenge

Kytun was tasked to design, fabricate, and manufacture a range of standard and bespoke aluminium solutions for several key areas on the hotel extension working alongside Alpha Projects on behalf of Mc Kays Hotel.

Part of the new section of the extension was built on an existing part of the hotel and required a bespoke solution for the parapet wall area around the building. The new roof also required a low profile, colour coded dry fix verge which had to be capable of dealing with the adverse weather conditions without staining the gable end walls.

Solution

Following various measurements and onsite meetings, a bespoke suite of architectural cills, profile dedicated corners and end stops were manufactured. The cills needed to bridge both brick and stone walling elements, they must incorporate a dedicated upstand at the back or upper edge to sit behind the external wall render and the profile itself was finished with a uniform 75mm front face with rainwater drip point.

For the new, natural slate roof verges, the roofer, McLean Roofing opted to use the Kytun AluVerge Slate Dry Verge System. The C02 profile trim is ideal for use with natural slates such as the Cupa Heavy Natural Slate.

Manufactured from aluminium, the product is polyester powder coated and has a 30-year material guarantee and a 20 year warranty for colour. The unique, patented self-draining system provides a maintenance-free, durable solution. As Pitlochry is located in a northerly part near the Highlands the product also provides complete protection from wind uplift.

Testimonial

“On the project, we were installing the Cupa Heavy slate and found it difficult to get a dry verge to suit the overall project. After reviewing various dry verge products on the market we chose the Kytun AluVerge Slate Dry Verge System. The reasons for doing so were the various benefits it has including aesthetics, material and colour longevity, and also ease of use. We were delighted with how the roof turned out. We would highly recommend the Kytun AluVerge Dry Fix System for any project.”
